Manufacturer 13 – Open DCC Ecosystem

About CV8‑SIG

CV8‑SIG is an NMRA Special Interest Group focused on interoperability, testing, and practical implementation of Digital Command Control (DCC) systems within the broader NMRA technical ecosystem. The project operates under the Manufacturer 13 Open DCC Ecosystem and aims to provide a neutral, user‑oriented platform for exploring how signalling systems interact in real‑world layouts.

CV8 does not replace or modify existing NMRA standards. Instead, it provides a structured test‑bed for observing and interpreting signalling behaviour across multiple systems.

Interoperability

CV8 works alongside the NMRA technical SIGs — MSS, CMRInet, and LCC — by using small translator modules that present each protocol to CV8 in a neutral format. This allows CV8 to analyse signalling behaviour without altering or driving any of the underlying buses.

Each signalling system remains fully under the control of its respective SIG. CV8’s role is observational and analytical, providing a safe environment for interoperability testing and layout‑level experimentation.

Test Layout

CV8‑SIG is working with the Layout Design SIG to develop a compact N‑Gauge demonstration layout. This layout will serve as a laboratory for testing DCC behaviour, signalling interactions, and multi‑system integration in a controlled, repeatable environment.

Community & Collaboration

CV8‑SIG welcomes NMRA members interested in DCC, signalling, electronics, and layout automation. Discussion channels will be announced shortly, including NMRA Discord and Groups.io.

A GitHub repository is planned to host documentation, translator module designs, implementation examples, and reference layouts.
